Visit cocktail bar in London

The cocktail bar "The Barrel Vault - JD Wetherspoon" in London is a typical example of the widespread pub chain J D Wetherspoon, known for its affordable prices and wide range of offerings. This location is situated in the bustling surroundings of St. Pancras International station and opened in December 2018. The name "The Barrel Vault" refers to the historical use of the area, where beer barrels from Burton-on-Trent were previously stored and transported to the capital by train. This connection to the past is emphasized inside the pub through the decoration, which showcases numerous old wooden barrels on racks above the guests - a nod to the space's former function.

Wetherspoon pub in St Pancras

The interior of the pub is modern and spacious, with an open entrance area that initially resembles the atmosphere of airport bars. However, as one delves deeper into the space, a typical pub feel unfolds, supported by tasteful decor with high tables, comfortable seating, and an open kitchen that allows a view of the food preparation. The space is long and narrow, with a slightly L-shaped layout, and the bar prominently placed on the left side. There are also a limited number of tables outside that blend well with the surroundings, even though they are directly on a busy street. The lighting is bright and the atmosphere lively, especially during peak times when travelers and locals fill the pub.

Enjoy traditional British breakfast

The drink selection is extensive and typical of Wetherspoon pubs. There is a wide variety of real ales, including well-known brands and rotating guest beers that stand out during beer festivals – such as the 12-day event in the spring featuring up to 30 different ales. Popular options include craft beers like Punk IPA, as well as international beers and classic lagers like Poretti, an Italian premium beer with 4.8% alcohol content. Cocktails are also available, although they are not the focus; they include simple classics that can be quickly served, which is important in a high-traffic environment. The offering is complemented by wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as unlimited coffee, which is a convenient extra for many guests. Prices are moderate compared to other central London locations, although slightly higher than Wetherspoon pubs outside the city center.

Culinarily, The Barrel Vault offers an all-day menu ranging from breakfast to lunch and dinner. Highlights include traditional British dishes like Fish and Chips, Pies, and Burgers served in large portions at affordable prices. The breakfast menu includes classics like Eggs Benedict or a full English breakfast, often at promotional prices below £3. There are also lighter options like salads and vegetarian dishes, with the kitchen focused on quick preparation and solid quality – typical of the chain. Seasonal offerings, such as a Valentine's menu for two for around £25, show that the pub also caters to special occasions. The food can be conveniently ordered through an app, speeding up service and minimizing contact with staff.

Pub with diverse drink selection

The atmosphere at The Barrel Vault is heavily influenced by its location. As part of a large train station, it attracts a mixed crowd: travelers taking a break before or after their journey, commuters heading home, and occasional tourists taking advantage of the proximity to Kings Cross and St. Pancras. It is particularly popular with rugby fans as live games like the Six Nations Championship are broadcast here. The mood can be hectic, especially during peak times, but the size of the pub ensures it rarely feels overcrowded. The staff are often described as friendly and efficient, although there may be waits during busy periods. Cleanliness is a topic of discussion – while some guests praise the regular cleaning of tables, others occasionally criticize dirty surfaces or unpleasant smells in the restroom areas.

The Barrel Vault is also known for practical amenities such as free Wi-Fi, useful for travelers, and accessible entrances for people with limited mobility. There are no traditional beer gardens, but the outdoor tables provide an alternative for those who wish to sit outside. The pub is a reliable spot for groups, whether for a quick meeting or a longer stay, and the app ordering makes it especially convenient for larger parties.

Decent prices for food and drink but service rather slow and staff provided food and drink without a smile or word spoken!

I cannot thank or praise the staff highly enough. I came with my special needs daughter, and when I asked if we could sit alongside one another, one of their staff quickly put two tables together. I wish I knew the names of the young ladies who went out of their way, but I made sure to tell the manager. They're a credit to the organisation. Super helpful, kind, considerate etc. Food was great and of course reasonably priced. Definitely worth a proper visit next time.

Staff are judgmental and rude. I have an Irish accent and both times I have visited i have been treated very rudely compared to my English friends. On one occasion, I was told I had had too much to drink even though I was just about to purchase our second drink. My accent was the only difference between myself and my friends. Won't be back for a third visit.

I stopped in for a couple of pints en-route from Luton airport to Rochester my timeframe was tight and I had a leg injury so I was happy that my beer arrived in good time

Love the steak and curry club, so another spoons for me, but a new one ..... Busy bustling atmosphere, table available instantly. Ordered a vegetarian cauliflower curry with sides, and a Thatchers zero Cider on da rocks. Drink arrived within minutes, and the curry swiftly after. No mango chutney left in any of the bottles on the commode. When asking a staff member, he got a box out of storage and ensured I could have mango chutney with my pompadompadoms. His name was John, very friendly and great customer care for us, applause. If I'd still worked in the hotel industry, I'd offer him a job! Good curry, nice sides, good value. Nice one! Especially you John.
